UPI Payments

UPI AutoPay is useful when a payment needs to happen regularly, such as a subscription, utility bill, insurance premium, SIP or EMI. But when that recurring payment is no longer needed, simply uninstalling the payment app or deleting the merchant's app does not necessarily stop the mandate.
A UPI mandate needs to be paused or cancelled through the relevant payment app, bank or merchant, depending on the type of mandate.
The steps vary slightly between apps, but the process usually involves opening the AutoPay or Mandates section, selecting the active mandate and choosing the option to pause or cancel it.
Cancel vs Pause: Which One Should You Choose?
Before cancelling a UPI mandate, it is worth checking whether the payment only needs to be stopped temporarily.
Cancel or revoke means ending the mandate so that future automatic debits under that mandate can no longer be made. If the service is needed again later, a new mandate may have to be created.
Pause temporarily stops the mandate for a specified period where the app and merchant support that option. Google Pay, for example, lets users choose a start and end date when pausing an eligible AutoPay mandate. PhonePe also supports pause and resume actions for eligible mandates.
If the situation is... | Usually consider... |
|---|---|
The subscription has ended | Cancel |
The service is no longer required | Cancel |
A payment only needs to be skipped temporarily | Pause, if available |
A recurring investment or bill should resume later | Pause, if supported |
A loan-related mandate is active | Contact the lender/merchant before trying to cancel |
So, if the intention is only to skip one or two payments, pausing can be more appropriate than cancelling.
What Happens When a UPI Mandate Is Cancelled?
Cancelling a UPI mandate stops future debits under that specific mandate. It does not automatically reverse payments that have already been processed.
There is also an important difference between cancelling a mandate and cancelling the underlying subscription or service.
For example, cancelling the AutoPay mandate for a streaming service can stop future automatic payments, but it does not necessarily cancel the subscription itself. The merchant may still consider the service active.
For that reason, someone who wants to completely end a subscription should usually cancel it with the merchant as well as manage the related UPI mandate.
How to Cancel a UPI Mandate on Google Pay
Google Pay currently provides an Autopay section where users can view live, pending and completed mandates. Live mandates can be paused or cancelled where the relevant option is available.
Open Google Pay.
Tap the profile picture in the top-right corner.
Select Autopay.
Open the Live tab.
Select the mandate that needs to be stopped.
Choose Cancel Autopay.
Enter the UPI PIN to confirm.
If the intention is only to stop payments temporarily, select Pause Autopay instead, where available, and choose the relevant dates.
How to Cancel a UPI Mandate on PhonePe
PhonePe supports AutoPay mandates and its current terms allow users to pause, resume or revoke eligible mandates. However, the actions available can depend on the merchant, mandate type and applicable rules.
The exact menu names can change as the app is updated, so the safest route is to look for the AutoPay, Mandates or recurring payments section.
Open PhonePe.
Open the AutoPay/Mandates section from the app's payment settings.
Select the active mandate.
Review the merchant and mandate details.
Choose Remove, Revoke or Cancel, depending on the option displayed.
Complete the required authentication.
If the mandate is eligible for a temporary pause, the app may also show a Pause option.
How to Cancel a UPI Mandate on Paytm
Paytm's current guidance says users can manage UPI AutoPay mandates from the Active Mandates section.
Open Paytm.
Go to the section showing Active Mandates or Automatic Payments.
Select the mandate or subscription that needs to be stopped.
Choose Cancel.
Complete the required authentication.
Paytm also explains that recurring payments can be managed from the AutoPay section, and that options such as pause or resume may be available depending on the mandate.
How to Cancel a UPI Mandate on BHIM
BHIM uses a My Mandates section for mandate-related activities. Its official FAQ confirms that users can view mandates under the relevant sections and receive confirmation when a mandate is revoked for supported mandate types.
Open the BHIM app.
Go to My Mandates or the relevant mandate section.
Select the mandate.
Choose the available revoke/cancel option.
Complete the required authentication.
For certain mandates, particularly IPO-related mandates, cancellation or modification may need to be initiated through the intermediary that created the request rather than directly in BHIM.
How to Cancel AutoPay in CRED
The exact menu names in CRED can change with app updates. If a recurring UPI payment was created through CRED, open the relevant AutoPay, payment or mandate management section, select the active instruction and look for the option to cancel or remove it.
If the mandate does not appear in CRED, check the UPI app or bank account through which the mandate was authorised, or contact the merchant or CRED support.
What If Money Is Debited After Cancelling a UPI Mandate?
First, check whether the mandate actually shows as cancelled or revoked and note when the cancellation was confirmed.
Check the transaction details in the UPI app or bank account.
Note the transaction reference or RRN.
Contact the bank or payment provider if the debit appears inconsistent with the mandate status.
Contact the merchant if the payment relates to a subscription, bill or service.
Keep the cancellation confirmation and transaction details for the complaint.
The RRN can help the bank or payment provider identify the transaction.
Why Can't a UPI Mandate Be Cancelled?
There are several possible reasons.
The mandate is linked to a loan
Loan-related mandates can have different restrictions. Google Pay, for example, says a loan AutoPay mandate cannot be cancelled through Google Pay and directs users to contact the merchant.
PhonePe also notes that some mandate actions depend on the mandate type and applicable rules.
If the mandate is for an EMI, cancelling the payment instruction does not cancel the loan or remove the repayment obligation. The lender should be contacted before changing the repayment arrangement.
The mandate is managed by another app
A mandate created or managed through one UPI app may not appear in another app in the same way.
If it cannot be found, check the app originally used to approve the mandate, the merchant's payment settings or the bank's available mandate-management options.
The bank account is inactive
Google Pay notes that an inactive linked bank account can prevent certain AutoPay cancellation actions.
The app is outdated
If the AutoPay or Mandates section is missing, first check whether the payment app has an available update. Google Pay specifically recommends updating the app if its AutoPay section is not visible.
The mandate type has restrictions
Not every mandate supports the same actions. Some may allow pause, resume or revoke, while others may require the merchant or intermediary to initiate the change. PhonePe's current terms explicitly make this distinction.
Can You Cancel a UPI Payment After Sending It?
A mandate is a recurring or pre-authorised payment instruction. A normal UPI payment is a transaction that has already been authorised.
Once a regular UPI payment has been authorised with the UPI PIN, it generally cannot simply be cancelled from the app. Google Pay's current guidance says users should contact the recipient or merchant for a refund and, if necessary, contact their bank with the UPI reference ID.
So:
Cancel mandate → stops future automatic payments.
Cancel UPI transaction → generally not possible once the payment has been authorised.
Closing Thoughts
Cancelling a UPI mandate is usually straightforward, but the right action depends on why the recurring payment needs to stop.
If the service has ended, cancelling the mandate makes sense. If the payment only needs to be skipped temporarily, pausing may be a better option where supported. For loans and other financial commitments, the lender or merchant should be contacted before changing the mandate.
The other important distinction is between the mandate and the underlying service. Cancelling AutoPay stops the payment instruction, but it does not necessarily cancel a subscription, clear an EMI or reverse a payment that has already gone through.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I cancel a UPI mandate?
Open the UPI app where the mandate is managed, go to AutoPay, Mandates or recurring payments, select the active mandate and choose the available cancel or revoke option.
How do I stop UPI AutoPay?
Open the relevant UPI app and manage the active AutoPay mandate. Depending on the app and mandate, it may be possible to pause or cancel it.
Can I pause a UPI mandate instead of cancelling it?
Yes, where the app and mandate support the feature. Google Pay allows eligible mandates to be paused with a start and end date, while PhonePe also supports pause and resume for eligible mandates.
Do I need a UPI PIN to cancel a mandate?
For Google Pay, cancelling or pausing a live AutoPay mandate requires the UPI PIN. Other apps may have their own authentication process.
What happens if I uninstall the UPI app?
Uninstalling an app should not be treated as a way to cancel an active mandate. The mandate should be formally cancelled through the relevant payment app, bank or merchant.
Can I cancel a loan EMI UPI mandate?
A loan repayment mandate should not be cancelled as though it were a normal subscription. Contact the lender first. Google Pay specifically says loan AutoPay mandates cannot be cancelled through Google Pay.
How do I cancel a UPI mandate in BHIM?
Open BHIM and check My Mandates or the relevant mandate section. For some mandate types, the cancellation must be initiated through the intermediary that created the request.
How do I cancel a UPI mandate in PhonePe?
Open PhonePe, go to the AutoPay or mandate-management section, select the relevant mandate and use the available revoke/cancel option. Some mandates may have different restrictions.
How do I cancel a UPI mandate in Paytm?
Open Paytm, go to Active Mandates or the Automatic Payments section, select the relevant mandate and choose Cancel.
What does “UPI mandate successfully revoked” mean?
It means the mandate has been revoked, so future automatic payments under that mandate should no longer be initiated. It does not automatically refund an earlier payment or cancel the underlying subscription.
Can I cancel a UPI mandate after money has already been debited?
You can still cancel the mandate to stop future payments, but cancelling it does not automatically reverse a payment that has already been processed. For a disputed debit, contact the bank, payment provider and merchant as appropriate.
